Seaweed in skin care

As I continue to educate myself on different approaches to treating skin concerns I sometimes  happen upon something that catches my attention and sends me into obsession mode.  I spend hours, days, weeks or longer learning as much as I can about the subject, and most recently that subject has been seaweed in skin care.  

I knew that there were benefits but I never knew that there were so many different types of seaweed all proven to treat different skin concerns.  Below is a summary of what I have learned about different types of seaweed, what parts of the ocean you can find them, and the benefits as they relate to skin.  

 

 

LAMINARIA DIGITATA
A brown seaweed found in the upper-middle section of the ocean.

Benefits:
•Hydrating and nourishing
•Rich in vitamins and minerals
•Helps to lock moisture into the skin
•Rich in anti-oxidants
•18 amino acids

 

ENTEROMORPHA COMPRESSA
A yellow-green nori seaweed.

Benefits:
•Reduces the desquamation process of the skin
•Soothing anti-inflammatory properties
•Increases circulation

 

CODIUM TOMENTOSUM
A small green seaweed with a branched cylindrical frond.

Benefits:
•Re-establishes and locks in moisture
•Balances and repairs skin barrier

 

AHNFELTIA CONCINNA
Red marine seaweed that thrives in the deepest levels of the ocean.  Found in the Hawaiian Islands.

Benefits:
•Soothing and repairing
•Hydrating and nourishing

 

LAMINARIA SACCHARINA
A yellow-brown seaweed, rich in all the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and amino acids.  Found in the middle section of the ocean.

Benefits:
•Controls oil production to keep pores clear
•Antiseptic and anti-bacterial

 

ULVA LACTUCA/AOSA
A green seaweed found in the upper middle section of the ocean.

Benefits:
•Protein-rich, hydrating and nourishing
•Stimulates synthesis of collagen & elastin fibers
•Anti-inflammatory and regenerative
•Increases vitality and brightness of skin

 

ASCOPHYLLUM NODOSUM
A brown algae found on the rocks of the upper shores.

Benefits:
•Rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids
•Helps lock in moisture to skin
•Rich in anti-oxidants

 

PELVETIA CANALICULATA
A brown algae found on the rocks of the upper shores.

Benefits:
•Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
•Helps to prevent aging
•Metabolic stimulation
•Cell renewal
•Treats pigmented spots for a more even-toned complexion
•Protects against DNA deterioration

 

FUCUS VESICULOSUS
A yellow-brown seaweed found in the upper middle section of the ocean.

Benefits:
•Water resistant
•Bacteriostatic
•Strengthens Eyelashes
